The GFD ((Smile Lines))

December 2010

A Christmas Message from Dr. Fox -

Dear friends and family of GFD,

In this season an in all seasons, we are filled with gratitude for your presence, the trust you place in us, and the relationships we share with each of you. With a New Year approaching, a time of reflection of the past and hopeful expectation for 2011 is appropriate.

Life is not without joys and challenges in health and families, but also presents opportunities for fresh starts and new beginnings. This past year we too have experienced joys and challenges at GFD and personally for me as well. One of the best things we can do for ourselves and others is to live our lives with gratitude, no matter what situation presents itself.

Reading the book Living Life as a Thank You has reinforced for me the importance of the "attitude of gratitude", believing that we can only 'grow' through good times and bad by the attitude we embrace.

My acronym for remembering this concept is G-R-O-W -

  • Living in "G"ratitude for love, humor, and compassion of friends, family and god.
  • Possessing a "R"esilience when facing challenges.
  • Willingness to see "O"pportunities
  • Gaining "W"isdom and joy through the circumstances of life

I find the quote from Ralph Waldo Emerson valuable - "What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us".

So, whatever challenges we are facing can be dealt with an 'attitude of gratitude' for what we already possess, including faith and perseverance to run the race. We are never alone and there is always hope.

Another of Emerson's quotes - "When it is dark enough, you can see the stars".

The true story of Christmas is one of hope, love, new beginnings, a holy baby, and a special star. I am reminded that "Wise men will seek him".

In this, our 26th year of business, We are grateful for you, our patients, at GFD. Your healthy smiles and well being are important to us and we are thankful that we can call you friends.

A heartfelt 'thank you', from all of us, to the men and women serving our country, and also their families. It is only through their sacrifices that we have the freedoms we hold dear.

Merry Christmas. We look forward to seeing you soon, and in the New Year.

Sincerely,

Dr. Lanae Fox

HYGIENE NEWS -

Christmas is heaven for those of you with a sweet tooth!  by Nancy Graham RDH

On a daily basis I pretty much like most things sweet like chocolate, ice cream, soda and cookies, and if it isn't sweet I put flavored creamer in my coffee, vanilla soy milk with my cereal, honey in my tea, and sugar on my grapefruit. Sound familiar?

Christmas is a time when people send sweets as gifts to their family and friends to show their love and affection. Homemade Christmas cookies, candy, chocolate desserts and cranapple french toast...well you get the picture, our taste buds love sweets.

Sugar is everywhere and it tempts us everyday of the year. Sugar consumption is responsible for the increase in obesity, diabetes, and other fatal diseases, including cancer. A constant sugar attack on our teeth is the main cause of tooth decay in children and adults.

If you want to do something to kick the sweet tooth habit start slowly to reduce your sugar addiction by reducing and eventually eliminating sugar from your diet. Read the labels on the foods that you are purchasing from the grocery store, because there may be hidden sugars in processed and ready made foods. Remineralize tooth enamel routinely with fluoride. Even though toothpaste contains fluoride, sometimes it is not enough for preventing cavities. For children and adults, GFD offers a fluoride varnish treatment at every checkup appointment. Also, a prescription strength fluoride toothpaste and mouthwash is available to purchase for your use at home.

At your next visit to GFD, ask your friendly Dental Hygienist which fluoride is best for you.
